‘World class’ Cricket Centre unveiled in Petra Jaya

KUCHING: Sarawak can now boast of having the High-Performance Centre for Cricket. According to Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the centre will be “the first facility of this standard in Malaysia.”

Located within the Petra Jaya Sport Complex, it will be equipped with five artificial practice wickets with a synthetic durfaced practice area including 25-metre bowler’s run-ups and a 6m high safety netting.

“I am confident that with this world-class training facility that we have, we can prepare our cricket athletes to face the Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2022,” the minister told a press conference after launching the centre yesterday.

He is also looking forward to the Sarawak Cricket Association (SCA) developing more local talents at the national level.

Sarawak currently has 5 players in the National Under-19 squad.

The centre is Phase 1 of a three-phase project. The tender will be out soon for Phase 2 which is the Sarawak Cricket and Rugby Ground. A cricket academy will be Phase 3.

Meanwhile, SCA vice president Victor Graman revealed that they are working with the Malaysia Cricket Association to implement the Cricket Adiwira programme to reach out to primary schools in Sarawak.

Sarawak cricket head coach Pramuka Sidesh is confident that the improved facilities augur well for the state squad preparing for the 2022 Johor Sukma.

Also present at the launching ceremony yesterday were Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan and Sarawak Sports Corporation CEO Dr Ong Kong Swee.
