SSC: Fitness training vital for esports athletes as well

KUCHING: People may think that fitness training is not necessary for esports athletes because it is only about playing games, says Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) sports development division manager Ahmad Rodzli Hashim.

“However, as an athlete, you need fitness be it physical fitness or mental fitness and it can help you perform better in competitions,” he added.

Speaking at the opening of a workshop, he noted that esports elite athletes face common problems like back pain, neck pain, elbow/shoulder pain, headache and being overweight.

Fitness and nutrition training, he said, is important for all sports as it helps to better prepare athletes for competitions.

Rodzli made these remarks at the first ‘Fitness and Nutrition Workshop For Esports’ of the SSC for 25 participants including state Sukma esports athletes, coaches, SSC and Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) officers at D-Virtual Park, Samarahan yesterday.

The instructors were Delvina Donald, Jennet Judith Unying and Mohd Shahril Abdul Rahim from SSC High Performance Unit while coordinators included Adilaila Samshuddin, Frido Angel Jeafry and Lawrence John Aloysios.

The workshop was organised by SSC and MSNS in collaboration with Sarawak Esports Association (Sesa) and Serba Dinamik Sdn Bhd to prepare state esports athletes face the challenges in higher level competitions such as Malaysia Games (Sukma).

It covered topics such as the benefits of physical training, examples of physical training and suggestions to improve physical training for esports athletes.
