01 Jul minister open to proposal for motor racing track in mukah
Kuching (June 28): Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has welcomed the suggestion by Balingian state assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi to convert the old Mukah Airport into a motor racing track.
“That’s a good suggestion but I am not very sure whether the State government has other plans for the place concerned.
“As we can see, Bintulu is also going to have a new airport and when the new Bintulu Airport is built, there are plans to turn the old airport into commercial area or others,” he told reporters in a press conference during his visit to the Vaccination Centre at the Sarawak Indoor Stadium.
Accompanied by Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan, permanent secretary to the Ministry of Youth and Sports Nancy Jolhi and Sarawak Sports Corporation Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ong Kong Swee, the minster was there to witness the first phase of the vaccination for 154 athletes and 41 elite coaches who are getting their first jabs.
“We have to look into that suggestion. It is good to turn it into a motor racing track because it will benefit the motorsports enthusiast in the area,” he added.
Last week, Abdul Yakub had given his full support to the youths in Mukah to have a place for motor sports.
He said the old Mukah Airport was an ideal place to become a motor racing track as there is no plan yet to have such facility in the town.
According to him, motorsports is one of the healthy activities and can help prevent the youths from being involved in unhealthy activities.
