Sports champion mindset training workshop for athletes at SMK Tabuan Jaya

KUCHING: Sarawak Sports Corporation on 17th September organised a sports mindset training workshop for 40 athletes from Sarawak’s Sports School of SMK Tabuan Jaya as a part of its ongoing training and athletes development programme which was conducted by Dr Garry Kuan Pei Ern of University Sains Malaysia (USM), Dr Chin Ngien Siong of Institut Pendidikan Guru Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman (IPGKTAR) and Dr Balbir Singh Bhagawan Singh of Institut Sain Negara (ISN).

The athletes were introduced to mental strength training and development using interactive methodology and activities with the aim to discover their mental state of preparedness in order to achieve their true performance goals and mission. These approaches shown by the speakers had enabled the athletes to acquire relevant winning strategies in a progressive and holistic way.

Biofeedback analysis assessment was also conducted by the speakers in order to help the athletes gain awareness of how anxiety or stress can affect their bodies, mindset and ultimately competition performance. They were also shown on how to bring their stress responses under greater conscious control through effective mental training skills.

In his speech, SSC’s chief executive officer, Dr Ong Kong Swee called on the athletes, coaches and teachers to acquire the skills and implement the psychological training they had into regular practice sessions and into competitions in order to deliver their best. Also present during the workshop was SSC’s head for sports development and training resources unit, Encik Jubali Suhaili.
