Esports to feature as competed event in SUKMA 2024

KUCHING: There is no denying that the influence of eSports among the younger people has grown significantly in Sarawak; thus it can be a positive thing to make it as a competitive competition in SUKMA next year.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that this has attracted many youth to get involved in the gaming industry.

In addition, he noted that there is no denying that eSports has clawed its way among the youth as it is their passion to compete among each other through gaming.

“In the past, parents looked at gaming as a nuisance for their children as it is thought that it will not help the children to build character or rather not beneficial.

“However, now that the world has accepted this new sport, we also have to take this opportunity as it also develops our youth and at the same time take part in representing eSports competition,” said Karim.

He said this at the closing ceremony of the MyBorneo E-Force Invitational 2.0 at the Sarawak Chamber, Riverside Majestic Hotel today.

In today’s invitational event there were a total of 1,476 participants all from the Borneo region (Sarawak, Sabah, Labuan Federal Territory, Brunei and Kalimantan, Indonesia) including those invited from Singapore and the Peninsular Malaysia.

Karim added that eSports can create healthy competitions among gamers at the same time to strengthen the relationship and rapport among them.
